Classification Of Road

 

(1) राष्ट्रीय महामार्ग (National Highway; N.H.)

(2) प्रांतीय महामार्ग (State Highways; S.H.)

(3) प्रमुख जिला सड़कें (Major District Roads; M.D.R.)

(4) अन्य जिला सड़कें (Other District Roads; O.D.R.)

(5) ग्रामीण सड़कें (Village Roads; V.R.)

(1)(National Highway or N.H.) -These roads are the most important roads of the country. It connects the main ports of the country, foreign roads, state capitals and major industrial and tourist places. These roads are also important from strategic point of view. National highways are double lane. Their width should not be less than 7.3 m. All the national highways have been given different numbers. For example, Delhi, Ambala, Amritsar represent the highway from NH-1. The longest highway in the country is NH-7. It passes through six (6) states. Its length is 2369 km. The top surface of these roads should be of modern type, concrete or bitumen.

National Highway or N.H.


(2) (State Highway or S.H.) -It connects the towns and important cities of the state. It meets the nearby National Highway. District roads also meet these state highways. Their width varies between 6.3 meters to 7.3 knots. In Uttar Pradesh, the state highways going in the east-west direction are denoted by 'L' and the highways going in the north-south direction are denoted by 'C'. If a one-way state highway is to be built, then its width should be 3.7 meters and shoulders should be made 1.8 meters wide on both sides.

(3)(Major District Roads or M.D.R.)These are important roads of the district. It connects the major production centers, markets and major highways of the district. Major district roads must have a single lane. The width should not be less than 3.7 m and there should be a paved surface. Less important roads connecting district headquarters are also called major district roads.

(4) (Other District Roads or O.D.R.) -It connects the production centers of the village with the markets and also meets the main highways. Their upper surface is made of waterlogged macadam (W.B.M.). They can be used in all seasons. It also connects the towns and villages in the inner parts of the districts.

(5)(Village roads or V.R.) These roads connect the villages and meet them through railway stations or other roads. These are unpaved roads built for traffic between villages.
